Jews for Jesus demands control over a disputed blog site, hosted at Blogger.com, Google's blogging service. The disputed site was created by a user named Whistle Blower. The content this user wrote criticized Jews for Jesus, who commented on several of Whistle Blower's posts, one of which reprinted here:

Whistle Blower, my name is Nathan Clark. I am the web developer for Jews for Jesus. We've been looking into the possibility of blogging and I was wondering if you would be willing to give us your subdomain. Gmail Mobile is offered free of charge, less the browsing fee charged by your provider, and can open all compatible attachments right onto your cell. Also featured are auto-responses, automatically sending a reply to the sender if you can't at the time. First is a quick RSS reader right at the top of each page, allowing you to view any feed quickly and efficiently. Also new is a dynamic plugin viewer. One hundred dollars sounds like a lot of money, but anyone who doesn't know enough about affiliate links to not click them isn't going to get a lot of clicks on his or her own site. And with an average of about a dime a click, you'll need around one thousand clicks on your friend Joe's mediocre site to reap in the hundred. Let's face it. It is a lot of money, but you need so many clicks to even see a penny that it's just not worth it.

Now, the toolbar download isn't very likely either. Even if all someone has to do is click the link once for you to get your dollar, put simply, everyone's going to download it from Google or Firefox themselves. Not from some person with a random link. Even if you do get a few downloads, all it will add up to is how much allowance you used to get in a month. Good luck becoming the next Bill Gates with this plan.

External Links:

Download Google Toolbar for Firefox

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google Base

Google Base? The gargantuan web site. The god of search among mere mortals. But what would come as a surprise to many is that Google is not as powerful as it outwardly shows. This engine, that many have set as a home-page, which many go to instinctively because it always gets results, is leaking oil. The truth is, with every search term, button press, and hit, Google is dying.

The above text is © 2005. Better quarantine your hard drive, there.

A new virus, aptly named PremiumSearch, is prominent. Or, rather, it was until Panda Software alerted the hosting ISP to the trouble. This is not your typical malicious virus that hackers create for mass panic. This virus is a money-making worm. When infected users go to Google, they are transferred to a "Google" that looks, feels, and acts the same, but produces affiliate links. Because of the mass infection, these people are making mass money. Quickly. This virus typically infects company servers, causing everyone in the building to be under PremiumSearch influence. As this problem has been quarantined, and will soon be neutralized, it is not an extremely large issue. In fact, I would think that Google would rather have that people didn't know about it.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google Print

The Authors' Guild? It's like you don't hear of an organization until they sue or are sued.

Yesterday, the Authors' Guild announced that they would be suing Google because of Google Print, Google's library project. Google Print, which came out in October 2004, allows users to browse and read books in its database. Publishers can give books to be put on the site, all for the benefit of learning. In mid August 2005, Google announced that they were to stop publishing copyrighted books, in fear of a lawsuit. Well, that lawsuit just happened. As said above, the Authors' Guild states that "Google's library project is a massive copyright infringement", and plans to sue.

Google enthusiasts wish this could be the first time Google was sued. Within these past two months. First, Microsoft sued Google in the Kai-Fu Lee trials, stating that Lee and Google had been trading information before Google hired him off Microsoft. Next, just a matter of days ago, the I.I.I.R. sued Google for creating Gmail, which they state they own. Now, just yesterday, the Authors' Guild doesn't enjoy the way Google goes off giving away text from copyrighted books. Wowee. It sure is a good thing Google acquired over $4.58 billion last week, or they probably won't be able to pay for it if they loose these two new cases. What a fun new way to solve problems America has created!

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google stock IV: Sold!

Okay, this time, really don't have anything fragile in your hand when you read this stock report.

Remember that stock offer of 14.16 million class A shares that Google got? They said they expected $4.11 billion, right? Well, that 'regulatory filing' that they announced publicly just a matter of weeks ago has turned out to be the largest secondary technology sale since 1996. Google earned a value of just over $295 per share in that offer, creating a mass sum of over $4.18 billion! It may not sound like a large difference between $4.11 billion and $4.18 billion, but that's actually an increase of over $70 million.

Along with the current share value of just over $300 dollars per share, Google has $4 billion plus $3 billion, equaling $7 billion of, basically, allowance. And what does a small child do when he gets allowance? He spends it on (acquires) things such as a candy shop (iTunes). So Google can acquire or develop pretty much anything they want. More news is expected soon.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Does I.I.I.R. own Gmail?

Well, does it? Maybe we should check the patent office...

Soon, Google may be looking at a legal headache, due to a certain British communications company. This company, Independent International Investment Research, or I.I.I.R., has had legal rights to Gmail since late May of 2002. This is interesting because Google came out with Gmail exactly two years after I.I.I.R. did. This hasn't been a large issue until now because I.I.I.R. and Google have been trying to work out an agreement. Now I.I.I.R. may take legal action against Google's Gmail, which I.I.I.R. claims it owns. Incidentally, Google has the same problem with Giersch Ventures (notice the G for Gmail) in Germany. This coincidence was directed away from legal action by Google by renaming German localized Gmail Google Mail. But now I.I.I.R. plans to team up with Giersch Ventures and create a major lawsuit if Google doesn't solve this problem temporarily with a "get fixed quick" scheme.

I.I.I.R. has owned Gmail for so long, I wonder why they didn't sue Google before. I say that this court case will push Google closer to the brink of its own downfall. If Google was stupid enough to create an email service name that at least two people already owned, then they should get their heineys sued.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google stock III: Stock offer

Don't have something fragile in your hand when you read this regulatory filing.

Today, Google filled out a regular file stating they see their net worth exceeding $4.1 billion from a new stock offer. This stock offer consisted of fourteen and one quarter million class A shares. Google will make no comments at all regarding whether this gigantic stock offer has anything to do with an acquisition. But you know better. Google has to have done something to get this large pile of shares. Possibly, buy some rights to the iTunes Music Store? Just a hunch, but the fact is that Google is doing something to iTunes. And with the new version 5 just released yesterday, who knows?

In other Google stock news, GOOG has gone up more than seven dollars per share today, a very large number. In comparison, most companies' stock will alter within a few cents or dollars a day. When a stock goes up that much, you know something just happened, or something's about to happen. And considering the large number of shares Google just rounded up… something might just show up sooner rather than later.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google AdWords

Oh yeah, because Google needs more money now.

This morning, it was reported that Google created a new way to rake in the money: magazine ads. This already existing service, AdWords, is provided by Google to advertisers. The new part is that Google purchases a single page of ads in a magazine, dishes out portions of the page to advertisers, and charges horrendously high prices. Google charges approximately $1000 for a quarter of a normal sized page. In comparison, three lines of online Google AdSense costs approximately $2.00 a click. Google ads should start popping up in tech magazines such as PC World as early as the 6th of September.

Most advertisers welcome this new change of pace with open arms. They say that its a much needed alternative, because AdSense just wasn't very reliable to bring in profits. The actual ads show about four different companies, a link to each one, and a small Google blurb at the top. There is also a link to see the same page online, where Google would undoubtedly shower you will more ads. Everyone knows all this gathering, this drawing in of more users and advertisers than every before means Google is up to something, but no one can figure out what.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google's chinese nemesis

Finally, someone to challenge the bully!

Today, the CINIC, the China Internet Network Information Center, released a search engine user report. And guess who wasn't first? That's right, Google. A Chinese search engine, called Baidu, was the most used search engine in all of China. And even though Google scored second most used, Baidu outplaced it by more than 20%. Why is Baidu more popular than even Google China? Well, for starters, Baidu offers a vast entertainment collection, including a wide selection of mp3s. Unfortunately, Google may be headed that way as well. Baidu is mainly used by students and teachers, making up more than half of its total use. Google China is used by the upperclassmen and rich almost exclusively, which is a real joke if you think about it.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Gmail signup with cell

When I signed up for Gmail with my cell phone, I got an interesting message: All your base are belong to us.

Late last night, Google quietly initiated a new way to sign up for Gmail. Going to the Gmail page just about says it all. Google invites anyone with an SMS enabled cell phone to sign up for Gmail. No invites, nothing. You get it just for having a phone. This could signify that Google will soon be bringing Gmail out of beta, which it has been in since its release. This means that anyone, not only people with invites or cell phones, can get Gmail accounts.

This new release will drag in the rest of the users that haven't yet discovered Google Talk or signed up willingly. Gmail has long been regarded as want-worthy by the general public, and its 1.0 release will add thousands of people to the already extensive Gmail users list. And that's bad. That means more and more users in its giant database. This is big. Google wants users a lot, and we're not entirely sure why.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google Talk

It's like iChat gone bad, then disguised as iChat gone makeover.

We're all eager to catch up with our friends about vacation, sports, and anything else on our minds either face to face or online. But if you choose online, we're going to talk about the new Google IM client, Google talk. Google Talk was released today in beta form. Its interface is highly similar to that of Apple's iChat and The Adium Team's Adium X. Google Talk enforces the fact that you do need an active Google or Gmail account to use the client. Also any buddies, which Google calls "friends", must have the client downloaded to be in your buddy list. Hmm… let's compare that to your average pyramid scheme. You find it, you sign up, you tell friends to sign up, they tell friends to sign up, and it goes on. Which is just your regular, necessary evil until you add in the fact that all of these people now have Google accounts.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google quotables

In case you were wondering, no. And now, I leave you with the Gooquotes.

Google has serious problems. →Go

We promise to upset your equilibrium. →Go

In the body of the e-mail, please include one paragraph as to why you would make a great Google Pizza Ambassador. →Go

We do not rent or sell your personally identifying information to other companies or individuals, unless we have your consent. →Go

Get your your bling-bling going with the new Google Blinky. →Go

I should think that if this doesn't prove that Google is actually crazy, nothing will.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google stock II: GoogleTunes

How could something so evil plan to swallow something so cool?

Quite recently, it was released that Google plans to create a major new partnership with Apple. Apple plans to incorporate iTunes into the Google site! This momentous deal would pair the world's largest search engine with the world's largest collection of legal music. Apple refuses to comment on the issue, so talking to them won't help.

What does this mean for the average Google user? Well, we all know that Google tracks all of your searches and your IP address for each search you do, and then implants a cookie to store temporary information, but this is bigger. Say the integration of Google and iTunes means that Google will now have an "iTunes" link next to "web, images, news", etc. Say that typing keywords, such as song name, artist, or lyrics will bring you a page with information about that song or album, along with a link to the iTunes Music Store. This would mean, that whenever you wanted music from iTunes, you would have to go though Google to get to it. Frightening? Yes.

Unfortunately, this deal has been set to happen, so we'll just have to sit back and watch this time. You can go ahead and see the story through Mac Rumors and The Street.

External Links:

See this story at Mac Rumors.com

See this story at The Street.com

Be sure to see this post's predecessor, Google Stock

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google stock

Hey, Bill, great news! I just saved a bunch of money by not buying Google stock!

Today we'll be discussing Google stock, and reasons not to buy it. All that money you wanted to put into Google's stock will not be well placed, no matter if you make money or not. Here's why.

All the employee benefits discussed in the Google Jobs page are often not available to employees. The many perks of a Google employee are said to be free lunch, day care, a Segway fleet, and more. But these seems to only be available to the upper class employees, a.k.a. Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Google's search quality has fallen considerably over the past year.

Google's sponsor link revenue took a hit in mid 2004 when they were forced to stop advertising gambling and rouge pharmacies.

Every other search engine is being compared to Google, the lord, because it seems no one else can compare. But what qualities make a search engine a Google? Some people have found that there are no qualities anymore. A large engine with several functions could easily outdo Google soon enough.

There are the Geeks who worship Google and everything about it. They waited for years for the opportunity to invest, and their purchases will inflate the stock price for everyone else.

Google isn't emotionally ready for stock. Google has started acting a bit like a celebrity, meaning it can't fend for its own, it can't handle the connect of competition, and they don't comment on over 98% of the questions asked or emails sent. They just send you a nice looking template email so you can look at it for several minutes before realizing you've been had.

Google clearly doesn't need as much as an investment as stated, because they would just use it on "employee benefits" and as makeup cash for lost ad revenue. The price of the stock will be enormous, and Google just isn't ready to handle the emotional stress of stock. They can't even handle email!

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Google cookie

I think you would fall over and die if you ate a Gookie.

Most of us know that we search Google, and they track it. But few people know that Google searches us, but we can't track it. Fortunately, we can delete it. The "it" that I am referring to is the Google cookie, which some people affectionately call "The Gookie".

The Gookie

Website

www.google.com

Name

PREF

Path

/

Secure

NO

Expires

1/17/2038

Contents

ID=1ad79cec35692fe4
TM=1123520628
LM=1123520628
S=rmDcCgqjU-TSD-WZ

Now to decode all this mumbo jumbo so you can understand what the heck this Gookie is talking about.

Website - This cookie is courtesy of Google.

Name - The cookie has supposedly been given to you to save your preferences, but it does more than that. It tracks which sites you go to so google can know more about you for their ads.

Secure - This cookie is not a secret, not accessible just by the government, and not private.

Expires - Like salt can preserve meat, this expiration date keeps the Gookie fresh and tasty until January of 2038. Looks like this chunk of code is going in the freezer for a long winter.

Contents - The ID is your own. Keep it sacred, or write it on a piece of paper and burn it. Your choice. TM is the last time you accessed Google. Of course, it's in code, so its hard to translate. LM is the last time you set your Google preferences. For me this is the same because I don't set Google preferences because that's just giving Google more information. S is not widely understood. It could be a checksum to ensure data integrity.

And that is the anatomy of the Gookie. For now, just disable your cookies if you're even going near Google.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Alternatives to Google

C'mon, they're good for you. Eat them. Now.

Today will be like your birthday, in that I am giving you a present. This present is not material, however. It is the choice of which search engine you want to use now that you know Google is evil. Before I provide you with this list, note that many of your favorite search engines are powered by Google. Including the search bar at the top of this very page. As well as sites like AOL and MSN. But here you are. Happy Birthday.

Giga Blast.com is a search site well on its way to having as many pages as Google does. Deriving from its name, Giga Blast was to be a search site with over a billion web pages indexed. Today they've surpassed that goal with 2,024,193,536 web pages indexed. Giga Blast offers searches of the web, directory (isn't that the same thing?), blogs (beta), travel (beta), and even the government (beta). They also have a toolbar, questions and answers section, and advanced search, and way too many more features to name. Giga Blast might just well catch up with Google someday.

Category: General
Pros: Multiple features. Large search index.
Cons: All areas except web and directory are in beta. Aren't Web and Directory just the same thing?
Final Quirk: The search button is marked "Blast it!".

Ask.com, as its name suggests, has the unique feature of searching important terms of queries in the form of questions. Ask.com is a search site you might know better as "Ask Jeeves." Jeeves, the butler, will find anything on the web including text, images, news, products, downloads, and blogs from Bloglines. Or at least as much as it can find from a low index of sites. This site also has a children's mini site called "Ask Jeeves kids". This mini site only includes searches to educational or children appropriate game sites, so it's probably not the site for you.

Category: Research
Pros: Searches downloads and blogs. Allows queries in question form. Children's site.
Cons: Limited site and images search.
Final quirk: Searching nothing in images will get you four pictures of celebrities Usher, 50 Cent, Hilary Duff, and Lindsay Lohan.

Zabasearch.com is a free people search site. It can pull up almost any person in the US in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, most of the website is still under development, so the search page is sloppy. Also, since Zabasearch cross indexes all information, you can get multiple identities for the same person, and not know which one is right. Furthermore, you can only get limited information about the person. Your results are limited to their name, birthday, and address. All Background check links are not in use. Hopefully Zabasearch will grow to be a site of its full potential, but today its still just a kid.

Category: People
Pros: Results are free, unlike Intelius.
Cons: Sloppy interface. Multiple results for single person are confusing. Limited information is given.
Final Quirk: Zaba actually means "free" in Greek.

Sidestep.com is an excellent travel research website. It includes hotels, planes, vacation spots (beta), rental cars, and deals. It even offers a toolbar. The flight search is exceptionally detailed, in that it has consolidated results based on number and age of passengers, counting the type of flight, searching nearby airports only, and more. Unfortunately, the deals search is bound to get you more than just great deals. It can through in scams too. Sidestep.com, while not widely known, should get you where you need to be.

Category: Travel
Pros: Fun interface. Wide search variety.
Cons: Deals may hide scams.
Final Quirk: Flights and Vacations searches are strangely similar.

Pinpoint.com is a highly detailed shopping site. Its lists are extensive and complete, and pop-up windows allow you to narrow searches even further. A search can be done in the simplest of fashions, by using words and numbers to specify cost or size. Even though Pinpoint is run by AOL, don't worry about Google here. It just isn't present. Pinpoint, like Zaba, cross indexes searches for you, giving you maximum results. It has an instant auto fill, in the sense that typing in half a word can get you a query and a link titled "Is ____ what you're looking for?" Although this can be useful, it can still get annoying if it's not what you want.

Category: Shopping
Pros: Easy interface. Run by AOL. Simple searches.
Cons: Auto fill links can be a tad annoying.
Final Quirk: The "There's more to see" section of links at the bottom of the page gives you a range of directly related to completely unrelated products.

So there you have it. Five great search sites for you to indulge in. See you later.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Scroogle search bar

A nice alternative to that other one you always see...

Today I will show you how you can direct more users away from the dangers of Google and its logs by directing users to Scroogle. This can be done very easily by giving the user a Scroogle search bar. Plus, the HTML code isn't that hard. I trimmed some of it off for you, but if you want the whole thing, you'll have to go to Scroogle yourself.

Find the exact spot you would like the search bar. Perhaps a header or a footer.

Paste the following HTML code into that exact spot. . .

<center>Enter your Scroogle search terms:
<FORM METHOD=POST NAME="qform"
ACTION="http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbw.cgi">
<INPUT TYPE=TEXT NAME="Gw" SIZE="40" MAXLENGTH="225">
 <INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="Search">
</FORM></center>

. . .to get this Scroogle search bar on your website.

Enter your Scroogle search terms:

To do this in a blog, simply put the HTML code into an entry or edit it into your template.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

The evils of Google

The unveiling of the truth, whether you like it or not.

Google seems benign enough, right? Think again. Every time you've ever done any search on Google at all, you add a bit of code to a profile Google is building of you.

That's right. Google knows what you did at 11 PM some forgotten Saturday night, or any other time or day for that matter. And don't think that this all goes away when you delete your history. This information is stored in a gigantic online database that can be accessed by the government at any time. "So what?" You might think. "It's not like they have my name or address." And you'd be right. They don't. At least not for your house. What they do have is a 4 to 12 digit number that's just as good. This number would be your IP address. While this address won't be on a road map of your city, it is a map to your specific computer. Even if you've never heard of an IP address, you have one, and Google knows it.

An outrage? Of course! How could sweet old Google do this to you? Will you ever be able to trust it again? Yes, if you're willing to ditch the cute interface and get down to brass taxes with my good friend, Scroogle. Scroogle is on your side with this issue. They aren't affiliated with Google in any way, and in fact, have had their own IP addresses banned from the Google server (not allowed to use Google anymore.) because of their belifs. Scroogle does exactly what its name suggests. It's a Scrooge style Google search that 'scrapes' away all the ads, cookies, and IP address logs that you get unwittingly every time you use Google.

Go to the Scroogle Homepage to use their scrooge-style Google search.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!

Introduction

Welcome, one and all, to Gmail This! - The Gmail and Google blog. This first post will inform you on how things go on around here. So sit back, relax, and grab a cup of coffee. No, not that cup. Not the one with the Google logo on it.

The Blog versus Google
Gmail This! Isn't a hate site. It is a site that primarily focuses on the flaws and news Google and Gmail. They are two of the most important and prominent subjects of our everyday Internet world.

The news is now, not then.
Everything news-related on this site is true. That said, this is an editorial blog. My opinions are not always fact, because sometimes the facts aren't in my favor. The news on this site is received from reliable sources, and sometimes even Google itself. The news on Gmail This! is current, and once you see it, you won't have to see it again.

No matter how much it changes, this blog is always consistent.
This site is updated constantly. So much so, that if you don't come back every few days, you may feel left behind. But don't worry. The site news box in the sidebar will always be there, and you can always access previous posts. Weekly and daily updates include posts, the Google site of the Week, the blog blurb at the top, and site listings that you can browse.

User rewards: the things most blogs don't do.
Regular commentators can get their sites advertised for up to a week, and multiple ways to contact with myself and other users assures immediate answers to your questions. Regulars are warmly welcomed with fresh content, because they know when to come. The button on the footer of all the pages allows you to sign up for a mailing list with Change Notes, a site change notification service. You'll be sure to get an email when anything new comes up. And this site is feed friendly, allowing almost any feed reader to access its syndication.

This blog, or Google. What choice?
Gmail This! is a portal into the Google world, for all to enjoy, at any time of day. With more than fifty user views every week and counting, Gmail This! is a solid stone for you to stay at when you need Google news and opinions.

Copy this image and link to me from your site or blog!
